A one week birding trip exploring this great destination. You can choose whether you wish to look at all aspects of natural history or concentrate on a specific one such as birding. This tour visits the wide variety of habitats found in this region and includes a spotlighting trip looking for tree kangaroos, possums and other nocturnal birds and animals.

A one week birding trip exploring this great destination. You can choose whether you wish to look at all aspects of natural history or concentrate on a specific one such as birding. This tour visits the wide variety of habitats found in this region and includes a spotlighting trip looking for tree kangaroos, possums and other nocturnal birds and animals.

A ride on Skyrail and a trip out to Michaelmas Cay on the Barrier Reef are optional extras as is a Hot Air Balloon ride over the Cairns Highlands. Based at the comfortable Cassowary House where the rainforest comes right up to the verandahs and led by an experienced and expert guide this is a great way of maximising your North Queensland wildlife experience.

  1. Day 1 Arrive Cairns

    Arrive in Cairns. Meet with guide and spend the rest of the day exploring the Cairns sites, the famous Esplanade for shorebirds, the mangroves for Mangrove Robinand Collared Kingfisher, the Centenary Lakes for kingfishers and crakes and the cemetery for the Bush Stone Curlews. Cattana Wetlands, Redden Island and Yorkey’s Knob are amongst other sites you can visit depending on the time available, tides, weather and bird movements. Optional Skyrail transfer to Kuranda.

  2. Day 2 Cassowary House & Mareeba area birding

    Spend the early morning around Cassowary House looking for Cassowary,Victoria’s Riflebird, Black Butcherbird, Macleays’ Honeyeater, Spotted Catbird, Musky Rat-kangaroo and other rainforest species. Later travel out towards Mareeba where the dry country  holds, Red-tailed Black Cockatoos, Pale-headed Rosellas, Squatter Pigeons, Black-throated Finches, Rufous Owls and more. The Mareeba area is also a good place for macropods with Eastern Grey Kangaroo and the delightful Mareeba Rock Wallaby.

  3. Day 3 Mid Altitude birding sites

    Head out to the mid altitude birding sites of the Tablelands Hasteie Swamp, the  impressive Curtain Fig and the Crater Lakes for Tooth-billed Bowerbird, Chowchilla,  a variety of monarchs, whistling ducks and cranes. Evening spotlighting for mammals and night birds can occur today.

  4. Day 4 High altitude birding sites

    Full day around the high altitude sites such Mt Hypipamee looking for Mountain Thornbill, Golden Bowerbird, Fernwren and platypus.

  5. Day 5 Daintree, Mt Lewis & Mt Molloy

    Daintree dawn boat cruise for Great-billed, Heron, Black Bittern (summer only), Little Kingfisher and saltwater crocodile. Come back via Mt Lewis which gives us a second chance at the mid to high altitude species. Visit the Great Bowerbirdbowers at Mt Molloy and look for Australian Bustard towards Mt Carbine.

  6. Day 6 Michaelmas Cay

    Full day reef trip to Michaelmas Cay where there are breeding colonies of noddies and terns. A glass bottomed boat trip and snorkel gear are included in the trip.
