This exciting 4 day tour offers you the opportunity to bird this rarely visited region – the newly opened and long geographically isolated island of Socotra. Lying off the coast of Somalia, Socotra was separated from mainland Arabia and Africa in prehistoric times. Its isolation has allowed an enormous number of endemic species (over 330 identified so far) to develop. Of the 140 recorded species of birds 11 are endemic.
With some 270 endemic plant species, many of which are relict forms, and with over 90% of its reptiles and many of its insects also endemics Socotra has been likened to both Madagascar and the Galapagos Islands. The whole area boasts some spectacular scenery and a very interesting culture and this tour offers you a great chance to bird where few others have birded before.
This is a short tour which can easily be done as a stopover en route to Europe or other parts of Africa and the Middle East. Time on the island is dictated by the fact that flights from Sharjah are only twice a week. All the Socotra endemic birds can be seen in a 3 night stopover but to properly explore the island we would suggest a longer stay. As well as a number of endemic birds there is a high degree of endemism amongst the plants including the spectacular Dracaena or Dragon’s Blood tree, and also amongst reptiles.

Accommodation is of a reasonable standard in a fairly basic but western style hotel with en suite rooms and arabic style food – rice, fish, chicken and flat bread.
This is not a difficult tour. Walking is generally easy though there are a few moderate walks. Transport is by 4WD vehicles and in some places the roads can be bumpy. In winter weather will typically warm, dry and sunny during the day though rain could occur. In highland areas nights can be cool to cold while in the lowlands it can be hot and humid.
